Updated: Jan 9

As 2024 draws to a close, Steel River Group reflects on an incredible year of growth, impactful initiatives, and meaningful collaborations. This year marked significant progress in our mission to empower Indigenous communities, foster sustainable development, and strengthen relationships between Nations, businesses, and industry.

Here’s a look back at some of our major highlights and what we’re looking forward to in the coming year.

Leadership Insights: A Message from our Founder

Empowering Indigenous Communities Through Action

Peepeekisis Cree Nation Funeral Home

This year, Peepeekisis Cree Nation achieved a historic milestone by developing one of, if not first Nation-led and operated funeral homes in Canada. Steel River Group was proud to support this groundbreaking initiative, reflecting our commitment to fostering Nation-driven economic development. More than meeting a vital community need, this project stands as a powerful example of Indigenous entrepreneurship, self-determination, and innovation.

Indigenous Clean Fuel Awareness Program

One of Steel River Group’s most groundbreaking achievements in 2024 was being awarded the Indigenous Clean Fuel Awareness Program. Designed to empower Indigenous youth and Nations, this initiative equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and leadership essential for driving sustainable energy solutions and clean transportation advancements. Set to launch in the coming year, the program represents a transformative step toward fostering environmental stewardship and Indigenous-led innovation in the energy transition. This project integrates Indigenous stewardship principles, promoting community impact, environmental advocacy, and active involvement in Canada’s energy transition. Through training on sustainable vehicles, clean fuels, and advocacy, participants gain actionable skills and mentorship from industry leaders. By focusing on inclusivity and accessibility, this program is paving the way for Indigenous leadership in the clean energy and mobility sectors.

Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) Program

In collaboration with Peepeekisis Cree Nation, SRG proudly supported and was successfully awarded the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Program (YESS), which will launch next year. Over the course of 133 weeks, this initiative will help 80 Indigenous youth on the Nation facing employment barriers gain critical skills and meaningful work experience. This program provided essential supports like childcare, transportation, and financial assistance, helping participants overcome challenges and achieve their employment goals. By fostering leadership, addressing systemic challenges, and investing in long-term capacity development, the YESS Program exemplifies our commitment to creating opportunities for Indigenous youth.

Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation Video Project

Another highlight from 2024 was the creation of a powerful video project in collaboration with the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation Nation. The video captured the essence of being ʔakanuxunik’, highlighting the cultural significance of the land, community stories, and leadership values. Featuring drone footage and interviews with Nasuʔkin Heidi Gravelle and Council, this project stands as a testament to SRG’s commitment to amplifying Indigenous voices through meaningful storytelling.

Our Growing Team and Culture

Team Expansion and Knowledge Growth

In 2024, Steel River Group strengthened its capabilities by expanding our consulting, project management, and marketing departments. Additionally, we enriched our team by deepening our Indigenous and cultural knowledge, enhancing our ability to deliver tailored, impactful solutions to our Nation partners.

Engaging with Nations Across Canada

This year, we had the privilege of being invited into numerous Nations and Indigenous communities across Canada, engaging in meaningful conversations and fostering stronger relationships. Each visit allowed us to learn more about the unique priorities, values, and aspirations of the Nations we support, helping us create solutions that truly align with their needs.

Celebrating Culture and Learning Together

At Steel River Group, we are committed to honouring and celebrating Indigenous culture while fostering learning and reconciliation. This year, we participated in several impactful events, including:

  • National Indigenous Peoples Day: A day to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

  • Orange Shirt Day (September 30): A time to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and engage in cultural learning as a team.

In addition, we were honoured to be invited by the Calgary Police Service to learn about their Sacred Space and YouthLink Centre. During our visit, we immersed ourselves in the cultural significance of the Sacred Space and experienced the CPS's dedication to fostering Indigenous understanding and reconciliation within the community. This visit reinforced the importance of collaboration in creating a more inclusive future.

Looking Forward to 2025

Upcoming Funding Streams

We are preparing to support Nations and businesses with several key funding opportunities in 2025, including:

  • Professional and Institutional Development Program (PID): Enhancing governance capacity through projects focused on leadership, community planning, and digital transformation.

  • Green Municipal Fund: Funding for sustainability projects, such as energy-efficient community buildings and green infrastructure, with Indigenous communities eligible for up to 100% funding coverage.

  • Local Food and Infrastructure Fund (LFIF): Supporting food security through projects like community food hubs and collaborative initiatives focused on sustainable food production.

Gratitude and Appreciation

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of our team, the trust of our partners, and the support of the Nations we collaborate with.

As we close out the year, we invite our partners and communities to join us on this journey of growth and impact in 2025. Together, we are building a future that honours Indigenous knowledge, drives economic progress, and creates opportunities for all.

Thank you for being part of our 2024 story. Here’s to an even brighter 2025!
